October Monthly Goal Meet-Up

Welcome October. Fall in full force.

This was a good month for me. In case you missed last month’s Monthly Goal Meet-Up, Rebecca Thorman of Modite has a great blog meet-up push for setting goals (publicly really made a difference for me).

Here’s what I did in September (crossed off if accomplished):

  • Focus on traveling, meeting directly with clients, stepping into a new position at work and gaining more responsibility. (On the way, also going to BlogWorld in Vegas with Lijit)
  • Gym and yoga 4-5 times a week. (Rebecca featured me on her October Monthly Meet-Up because I surprised even myself at finding the time to do yoga and gym 4-5 times a week this past month. Even when I was so busy at work and had an event planned for the evening, I would plan ahead and get up before work at 6:00 AM for a morning yoga session or the gym. It’s so mental and it felt so good each time I drew from my the will power. I also feel amazing).
  • Read 2 books for pleasure (I read 4 1/2 books. One is en route to be finished!)
  • Keep time for myself, at least once a week. (With conscious effort I stayed sane and managed to do it once a week).

For October I am Proposing:

  • Continue 4-5 times a week gym. It’s too good to give up.
  • Focus on widgetizing and updating my blog from a technical standpoint.
  • Post another video blog post. Do it, Grace.
  • Enforce budget and not allow one shopping trip in the month of October. (I moved so the bank took a dent with moving fees, buying new furniture, etc. and for some reason, I’ve been entranced by Fall clothing and shopping more than I would like to admit. I don’t need clothing. I don’t need to shop for clothing for October. Mark my words).

  • Taking time for yourself is a great goal. It's so important. I'm in awe of your gym/yoga goal. I used to be in the gym or running every night but have somehow derailed.
  • @Angelia It isn't easy about gym/yoga. But I do know that I feel so much better and it positively influences every area of my life.

Some tips: I have resorted to yoga in the morning (before work) which leaves my evenings still free and also refreshed for the day. I have also written out my workout schedule, around whatever is happening each week (events, dinners, even laundry, etc.)
  • It is not easy to work out in gym 4 to 5 times a week when you are still busy with your work!

Looks like you have a lot of savings to do this month. All the best!
  • @Charles I know, it's not easy. Like Elisa said, I want to make it into my schedule so it's not just a goal. I did it in September and made time in the morning instead (before work) and it still allowed me to be free in the evenings or continue work, be social, events, etc.

I'll let you know how this month goes :)
  • First of all Warrior2 is my FAVORITE standing pose. I love the strength that emanates from your arms straight out and the power of stature in your legs. Great photo, Rebecca was right to include it!

Secondly, I did a similar thing and included the same amount of yoga sessions in my October goals as well. I figure it isn't a bad idea to reinforce and hold myself accountable for at least one more month. Heck, by the time I take it off goals maybe it'll just be so part of my routine I won't even think of it as a goal anymore!
  • @Elisa Thanks! It feels so good. In fact, I could use some warrior 2 in my life right now :) Yoga, tomorrow evening.

I think your last point struck a chord with me. Maybe my yoga and gym 4-5 times a week shouldn't be a goal but rather part of my everyday life. It usually is, but sometimes life gets in the way and it's only 2-3 times a week. I'm going to focus on integrating it so it's as natural as breathing or eating :) Thanks for the thought!
  • I don't know if you've tried it, but Lululemon is great for yoga and gym gear. I find it a lot better than brands like Nike and Adidas. The fit is more specialized (they have at least 20 tank tops that range in al types of support!) and they aim to have their clothes trendy too. Not sure if they have one in Boulder, but they did open it up to online shopping. It's a little on the pricey side, but I find it to be worth it.
  • @Barb I love Lululemon! Although they are rather pricey, I find that most yoga clothing is. I know the quality and comfort is superior, but I am always on the lookout for affordable yoga clothing. Any additional tips? :)
  • I looked online at the prices for Lululemon and they are expensive! Canada is much cheaper! Minus about 10USD, and that's about right...

Roots has decently priced yoga gear, and the quality is all right. Not superb, but when you get it on sale it's great. http://www.roots.com But I can't seem to find anything on their website right now, might be better in store (I'm going home in three weeks so I'll let you know if I see anything)

VS might (La Senza is the equivalent and since they're owned by VS...) have yoga clothing too, and that also falls in decent quality for price.
  • @Barb Great! So exciting, thank you. I haven't heard of Roots, I will definitely check them out.
  • I have to say, your goals look pretty measly this month... just kidding! I did think that (a little) at first, but then I realized that keeping 4-5x/mo and keeping to a budget are huge! That's the thing.. sometimes when you're in a good spot, it takes so much just to keep that going. I find that frustrating personally, because I like to just keep charging up and through. But maybe that's where I'm going wrong. Maybe I should just focus on maintaining sometimes before going all out... talking more to myself now... stopping :)
  • @Rebecca I sort of agree with you :) I'm going to be out of town every single weekend in October so I'm trying to balance that and think ahead. Sometimes I want to charge ahead as well (actually that's all the time) but I realize that breaking off big pieces 24/7 can be wearisome. I like little pieces that make headway. And in terms of my blog, I don't focus on anything but writing and I think I can update and do so much more. So that might be a bigger piece than I realize. We shall see. As for not shopping, that's very real haha, and I could save a lot of money by not indulging in Fall pieces.

Ha, I know I don't have to validate myself to you :) Just sayin' I agree but also think the little pieces that I named are necessary for me, this month at least :)

Grace, congrats on your completing your September goals. What widgets are you going to use for your blog...there are so many. Maybe that will be a November goal for me...lol

  • @CJ Thanks! I work with blogs everyday at Lijit but need to actually use some of the plugins and widgets available through WordPress. Technically, I don't update my blog. I was telling Rebecca that I just write. I know I have good content, but want to do more with my blog itself. Thanks for the support. Let me know if you have any thoughts!
  • Congrats on meeting the goals, and good luck in October Grace
  • You're going to blogworld? Me too! We should definitely plan to meet up some time.
