One day I was tweeting away and boom! Carlos appeared in the tweet-o-sphere, with ideas, comments and @replies a plenty. We started connecting right away (this leads up to his post nicely) and I knew with his International perspective and enthusiasm, I wanted to hear his thoughts on, What Inspires You-so here he is, number 16 in the series.

Keep Renewing your Inspiration

“We need to change because it is the only way to be where we are needed to be, where we want to be” – John Francis

After looking back at my life and my true moments of inspiration, I realize that one element has been the source of all of them: Change.

I’m Argentinian, but thanks Obama anyway.

The thing about change is that it always brings the new. It brings potential. I have seen that with every life-changing decision that I made, I faced fear, uncertainty and doubt, but most importantly, excitement.

Not everyone loves change. Some people just prefer living all their life in the same place, or going to the same job as long as they feel comfortable and are familiar with it. And that’s alright. Change doesn’t love everyone either.

If you are anything like me, you know that every time we choose the new, we feel this rush, telling us that there’s so much to gain. So much to learn.

That’s the key: Learning. With every change, there’s new people, cultures, ideas, to learn from. I’m leaving Argentina so I can study and live in Australia, not only because the education is 1,000 times better, but also because the people and multicultural experience it’s absolutely priceless. There’s no inspiration like the one you get from seeing places, or hearing opinions that are totally different to what you are used to.

This is the true power of social media for individuals. It’s not strengthening your network, or reaching more readers for your blog. It’s connecting , really connecting with amazing people that can teach you and inspire you new ways of thinking and seeing life. The idea of this post may have never entered my mind if I hadn’t met Grace. Most of our best ideas are triggered by other people’s.

Keep seeking change, as scary as it may be. Look for new people, new habits, new places. The intellectual growth and inspiration that you’ll get is worth it. And please oh please, connect with me, as I’m sure we can learn from each other!

Thank you Grace for the opportunity. You are one hell of an inspiration too!

{Thank you Carlos and kudos on your English and taking that leap. I’m so happy to have been able to feature you and connect. Best of luck. -Grace}

  • Susan, I find your whole attitude really awesome and inspiring as well.

To be able to realize that change can be good, when you were naturally not a "changing-lover" person, it's a wonderful lesson for anyone still fearing the new.

I'm so glad that you agree with this point of view, because I wouldn't be posting it here if I weren't convinced that it can lead to good things for anyone trying to do it.

You rock Susan, thanks for your very valuable opinion!
  • Carlos: It's so great to see you blogging and sharing your insights! You always struck me as incredibly perceptive and this post is no exception.

I'll admit it -- I'm one of those you mention that don't like change very much (and I'm sure, like you say, that the feeling is mutual!). The very idea brings a lot of unnecessary trepidation and anxiety and means that I'm not in control -- and that's never really an easy thing. Or at least, that what I used to believe.

Looking back, some of the greatest learning experiences and opportunities occurred because of a change I wasn't ready for, and I've had to gather my army of strength, courage, and support network to push through that anxiety and fear that followed. But I did it. And what I've found is that once I cross that hurdle, once I pass that anticipation, once the change actually happens, I am very easy to adapt and continue on. I think I feel that rush you describe more in hindsight ;)

I don't seek out change, but I don't necessarily shy away from it, fear it, anymore, either. Because I think you're absolutely right: there is so much to learn, so much to experience, so much to explore if we would accept it and step outside our comfort zones. Change can open up a fantastic new world of people and ideas and opportunity where we would have once otherwise been limited.

Thanks so much for your post, Carlos, and best of luck as you move forward with your own changes and opportunities!

Grace: Thanks for having Carlos on the blog; he's a pleasure to know and a joy to learn from.
